Self-sufficient living and farming

Life on this organic farm in the beautiful rolling hills of Corrèze feels like a return to the basics of farming and living. With just 10 dairy cows and 20 beef cattle, the current owners lead a self-sufficient life on 50 hectares of their own land and 60 hectares of leased land.

Stone barn with gîte
In the hamlet stands the sturdy stone barn, with a gîte on the ground floor. This has a living area of almost 90 m² and comprises a living space with a kitchen, sturdy wooden beams, stone walls and a wood-burner. There are two bedrooms, a bathroom with a shower and washbasin, and a separate toilet. In front of the property is a wild garden where the septic tank is located.

Farm
The professional cheese-making facility is located on the upper floor of the barn. Here, the milk from the 10 dairy cows is processed every day into raw milk cheese and quark. The jars are stored in the cold store to be sold twice a week at local markets. The cows graze outdoors all year round, but can take shelter in the simple shed behind the stone barn. Additional income is generated from the sale of beef cows and heifers, as well as subsidies. The hay and machinery are stored in a simple plastic tunnel.

Trips to the supermarket are rarely needed. On this farm, you can live almost self-sufficiently. There are various fruit trees, a large vegetable garden, chickens, pigs and cows for eggs, meat and milk. Both the gîte and the main house are heated with wood sourced from the farm’s own woodland (approximately 12 hectares).

Off-grid wooden house
The wooden house, with a living area of approximately 130 m², is reached by walking along the path through the fields. It is completely secluded and remote, with no mains utilities. Electricity is generated by a number of solar panels. A 12-volt circuit has been installed in the house to use electricity as efficiently as possible. Hot (spring) water is produced in summer by two solar panels and in winter by the wood-burning stove. In the centre of the house stands a large brick-built wood-burning stove; the thick wooden walls and well-insulated roof keep the house very cosy during the cold months. On the ground floor is the living area with a kitchencorner and a bathroom fitted with a shower and a dry toilet. The first floor has not yet been fitted out. There is currently one large space that can be divided into bedrooms and one room that is used as a double bedroom.

If you want to live and farm off-grid, this is your chance. Thanks to the cheese dairy and European subsidies, you can generate a good income here, especially as a young farmer (up to 40 years old).
